I have strived to create a place where people can escape the aggravation and empty promises that are typically experienced in conventional health clubs and instead, treat themselves to an exercise environment that is energetic, intelligent and supportive. I have come to learn that regardless of experience or ability, most of us will not be successful with a fitness plan until we acknowledge that we just can’t do it alone. This statement may produce outrage from my colleagues in the public health community or even perceived as pessimistic, but I’ve got to tell you -- it’s true. I call it the 4 Cs of fitness success. Your exercise facility (or other strategy that you choose) must be one that provides comfort and convenience, care and coordination. The simple translation: for most people to embrace exercise physically and even mentally, the experience must be one that causes as little mental or emotional anguish as possible (this is actually more important than the physical aspect). The exercise must be delivered to you in a convenient and comfortable way. Convenient location and parking may certainly be part of it, but I am going even deeper to suggest that you think of convenience and comfort more in a way that represents how the environment you exercise in (including physical surroundings, staff and fellow exercisers) makes you feel. As you might imagine, these external variables actually have an impact on your physiology. The other two Cs care and coordination are appropriately related. They speak more about the quality and style of preparation that is taken by staff to ensure your safety and satisfaction with the physical component of the exercise. Your unique physical, lifestyle and even personality characteristics must be evaluated and respected when a plan is created for you. Also, how well are these systems and processes executed and then communicated to you and on your behalf? Think about the 4 Cs and you’ll be better able to assess the efficacy of your current program. All four must be present for long term success. A tremendous amount of care and research has taken place to achieve my goal of creating a fitness studio "where quality and expertise meet ma and pop". Notice, I haven't even spoken about the credibility, experience or qualifications of the fitness staff?! Well, you know what, if you also, have that to offer, then you've hit a home run -- and that's exactly what we have done. |
